It was about a ten-year-old Bombay boy who one day happens upon a rainbow’s beginning, a place as elusive as any pot-of-gold end zone, and as rich in promises. ![]() Maybe he didn’t really find the story, in which case he had succumbed to the lure of fantasy, and this was the last of the many fairy tales he told me or else he did find it, and hugged it to himself as a talisman and a reminder of simpler times, thinking of it as his treasure, not mine-his pot of nostalgic parental gold. ![]() Shortly before my father’s death, in 1987, he claimed to have found a copy moldering in an old file, but, despite my pleadings, he never produced it, and nobody else ever laid eyes on the thing. ![]() I wrote my first story in Bombay at the age of ten its title was “Over the Rainbow.” It amounted to a dozen or so pages, dutifully typed up by my father’s secretary on flimsy paper, and eventually it was lost somewhere on my family’s mazy journeyings between India, England, and Pakistan. ![]()

"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.Įllen Cooney's own dogs served as the inspiration for many of the dog characters in her new novel, The Mountaintop School for Dogs and Other Second Chances. A worthy shelf-mate to books by Garth Stein and Carolyn Parkhurst, this is a heartfelt novel about finding in your fellow animals a deeper sense of home, healing, and hope for a fresh future. For, like the racing greyhound who won't move, the golden retriever who returns every time he's adopted, and the Rottweiler failing at search-and-rescue, Evie has a troubled past. But when she's finally on the mountain with staffers, volunteers, and the dogs, Evie learns quickly, finding refuge in the Sanctuary as the dogs do. Auberchon lets her pass, Evie joins a training program there - never mind that she doesn't know a thing about animals. High up on the mountain, the Sanctuary is a home for strays and rescued dogs. Overall, I really enjoyed this and am hoping that Abramson will be coming back to this world of baseball! I was glad I kept going though, because that changed. ![]() The other thing was that initially I didn't feel a whole lot of chemistry or connection between the main characters. It was mostly in how Kari and Ryan react more than anything. There are a few places that were unrealistically dramatized, at least to me, dealing with both characters' exes. I only had two minor grievances with this one. The romance was really sweet and I could feel the chemistry spike up from about the middle of the book to the end. Ryan's mom added some nice tension and became a delightful character. I also really liked Ryan and Kari, who are the focal point and have some serious challenges ahead of them. I really liked that there is a lot more baseball in this one as the girls attend a lot of the practices and games. I was excited to get to go back to to this baseball world and see where the characters I'd already fallen in love with were doing. I loved CHANCES ARE that was about Kari's brother, Ben, and her best friend, Maya, which was released previously (they can be read by themselves, but it helped to already have read the other story). Readers will enjoy the charming characters and the complex situation, while hoping for a happily-ever-after ending. ![]() CHANCE FOR HOME was a sweet romance between a pro baseball player and a regular girl who has dreams of becoming a doctor. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Whitehead is a rare creature in the landscape of contemporary fiction: a critical darling with a genuine and voracious appetite for popular culture. At one point, after binging on nocturnal poker shows and crashing on the couch, he observes that sleeping on the sofa reminds him of his recently ended marriage. It’s a comic dissection of a subculture in the tradition of David Foster Wallace’s best nonfiction, but some personal information also seeps out. What’s striking about his vision of a fallen New York City is how little has changed: It’s still hard to find a cab, gentrification and consumerism are resurgent, and a general feeling of futility suffuses most endeavors.Īfter his zombie novel, “Zone One,” Whitehead plunged into the world of professional poker to research his new book, “The Noble Hustle: Poker, Beef Jerky and Death” (out this month). For Colson Whitehead, though, evoking hordes of the undead streaming through the streets was just another way of describing life in the big city. Writing a zombie novel set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan would not strike most authors as an autobiographical project. ![]() ![]() ![]() OL15492795W Page_number_confidence 80.17 Pages 118 Partner Innodata Pdf_module_version 0.0.7 Ppi 360 Rcs_key 24143 Republisher_date 20210223195357 Republisher_operator Republisher_time 324 Scandate 20210220022752 Scanner Scanningcenter cebu Scribe3_search_catalog isbn Scribe3_search_id 9780545206945 Tts_version 4.
